Where’s Ken? was a fun little song written in the early days of Courtesy of Tim. At this point, I don’t remember if I started with the bassline, or the lyrics, but it was one to just have fun with and not overthink anything in the writing process. The bassline just flowed out of me, all bouncy and very recognizably ska. The lyrics actually tell a mostly true story. I was out having lunch and a drink alone one day when I could hear this group at the bar talking about their friend who didn’t show up. I never caught the guy’s name, so let’s just call him Ken, shall we? They made jokes at their poor friend’s expense, complaining that he never comes out and actually did start talking about what kind of mental disorder this person must have to be so anti-social. The song comes off in a light-hearted tone, but the message is actually based in my disgust that these people would speak so poorly about their friend and be so flippant about mental health. I mean, really, should he even call these assholes his group of friends? Naaaahhhh.
lyrics
Where's Ken?
(Hey! Hey! Hey!)
Verse 1:
Sitting at the bar I over-
Hear the conversation of the
People sitting near me drinking
Wearing faces not disguises
Representing their true feelings
Talking freely of the friend they
All look down upon
Hey
Ho
Hey
He says maybe next time but they
All know what that really means he
Likely won't show his face
So....
Chorus 1:
Ken gets left out of the fun again
This time it's not so different
How would he even know when
He's never ever there
(Hey! Hey! Hey!)
Verse 2:
Snide remarks, jovial laughing
Joking about what kind of a
Mental disorder he must have
Playing doctor when he’s not there
Insults that he never will hear
Should he even call these assholes
His group of friends?
Hey
Ho
Hey
He says maybe next time but they
All know what that really means he
Likely won't show his face
So....
Chorus 2:
Ken gets left out of the fun again
This time it's not so different
How would he even know when
He's never ever there
Ken wouldn’t think this is fun and
How could anyone blame him?
So-called friends treat him like
A piece of dirt behind his back
