This is the hollowing of middle America, watching ways of life disappear. Farmers. Small towns of a few thousand whose prosperity was always tied to a few major employers right onsite. Our generation is faced with the gig economy. Older gens face forced retirement, bewilderment, or adaptation if they have someone with know-how. The world shifts quickly underneath us. It's also acknowledging that perseverance and survival are not always the highest virtues. Knowing when to cut your losses. Giving up is the right move if you're following a dead end.

Verse 1
What can we say in this town of ghosts?
The lights they burned out so long ago
When they turned off the heat we lit the coal
When they turned off the power we lived by candle glow
When do you decide it’s over?
When do you decide it’s time to go?
Chorus
Walk away, let the darkness take this place
There's no guilt
Abandon hope, it led us astray
Verse 2
Roads aren't closed but there's nowhere to go
Living here has made me old
Dawn came and went, but nothing rose
All traces soak into the dusty earth
We gave away control, was it worth it
There was a battle cry, but we forgot the words
Chorus
Walk away, let the darkness take this place
There's no guilt
Abandon hope, it led us astray
